Zarna and the Maore Garden

This is an illustration meant to teach the children of Mayotte the perils of erosion (adults too, but children first and foremost). It is to be printed on a 250*120cm canvas and displayed in schools around the island.

Erosion is caused by not-ideal agricultural practices as well as thoughtless building during the rainy season. The effects are numerous : mud flows into the lagoon, asphyxiating the coral reef and durably damaging this rich ecosystem, the soils are rendered infertile, and floodings become frequent and fatal.
This already tiny island sinks a little more with each passing year.

The left half of the image is meant to show how better agricultural practices can preserve biodiversity on the island and improve the quality of life of all its inhabitants. The other half shows what awaits if nothing changes.
